HELPING OTHERS AS AN INSTRUMENT OF GOD

Article from the Consolidated Annual Report (Pg 10, Sept 30, 2008) of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, USA
By Dennis Taus, President Holy Trinity Conference, Cincinnati, OH

I have a story I would like to share.  We have a parishioner at church (I’ll call him Guy) who buys food to donate to our SVDP about once a month.  He usually comes with two or three large boxes and about 8 to 10 bags full of food and toiletries.  About 6 months ago we helped a single gentleman (I’ll call him Rick) who had recently come out of the homeless shelter.  We helped with some food and a furniture voucher, since he didn’t have much furniture in his apartment.  He was working part time, and trying to pick up more hours to do a little better financially, but for the most part he was doing ok.

Earlier this month, Rick came to the food pantry to get a little help with toiletries and just a small bag of food was all he wanted to take.  Rick took several of the things that Guy had donated just days before.  Rick asked about our church and wanted to know what time the services took place.  I guess he was raised Catholic but hadn’t been to church for some time.  I told Rick the times but didn’t expect to see him actually show up.

This past Sunday morning the church was crowded.  We had several Boy Scout troops visiting the area joining us for Mass.  Rick did come to Mass.  He found a seat, and wouldn’t you know it but he sat down right next to Guy.  We keep everything confidential, so Guy had no idea that the person sitting next to him at Mass, worshipping with him, and shaking his hand in a sign of peace was personally helped by his generosity just a few days earlier.  Sometimes we help out of habit, sometimes we might feel an obligation to help, but every now and then we have a feeling of peace that washes over us letting us know that we are helping as an instrument of God.

Who We Are - What We Do

The Holy Trinity Conference of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society helps with several things.  For help, call the church at 732-2024 and press extension 12.  Leave us a message and we will return your call Monday through Thursday between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

We help with food

Food help is given up to once per month per household.  Besides home deliveries, we also open as a food pantry in the Holy Trinity church basement on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 7:00pm until 8:30pm (times may infrequently change due to other events).  Monetary help and vouchers are not available at the food pantry.

We help with furniture and clothing vouchers

The vouchers can be used at a Saint Vincent DePaul store.  Voucher help is given up to two times per year per household.

We help with utility disconnect and rent eviction notices

When funds are available, monetary help is given once every 60 days up to three times per year for households that fall within our parish boundaries.
